APT Centres

'A Place to Talk'

Back in September 2000 we launched our first APT Centre in Haverhill as a pilot scheme.  It was a huge success.  Although we found linked volunteer befrienders for many of the people with learning disabilities on our books, the sad truth is that it can sometimes take a while to find the right person to make a link.

APT ('A Place to Talk') is a centre run by a local Co-Ordinator where SBS members and other adults of all different ages can go without carers to meet up, with or without their befrienders.  People can join in the many different leisure activities on offer each week, workshops on different topics, gain computer skills or seek advice on a problem and make new friends.  APT is run by a staff member with a number of volunteers who help with the activities and refreshments, chat to people or just listen.

Since opening our first APT Centre we have been able to open other APTs in Sudbury, Bury St. Edmunds, Ipswich, Lowestoft, and Stowmarket - all of which are well attended.

We are also pleased to announce the opening of our newest Apt Centre in FELIXSTOWE on 8.10.09 - which is open on Thursday mornings and is proving to be very popular already!

Our SAXMUNDHAM Apt Centre has now relocated to LEISTON, and opened it's doors for the first time at the United Church, 47 High Street, Leiston on Tuesday 1st December 2009.
